Closer to Nature
Summer is here and with it our exodus to the outdoors. Spending our waking hours soaking in the sun, planning al fresco dinning, emerging from our winter hiatus. As we unpack our seasonal clothing, sandals, suntan lotion and sunglasses, we also turn our attention to the outdoor spaces. The garden, patio, yard, balcony and pots that let us luxuriate in color, fragrance, greenery linking a closer connection to nature.
In 2025 gardening trends are shifting towards sustainability, functionality as many seek to become more responsible gardeners. Conscious horticulture is a “thing”. Elements that are rapidly incorporated include water –wise gardens, choosing native plants, edible landscaping and prioritizing both ecological and scenic designs. Some gardeners are taking it a step further and are learning and practicing re-wilding. Re-wilding is intentionally restoring a wide range of native plants in order to balance the ecosystem and allowing nature to take its course rather than focusing solely on a tidy manicured landscape. At a basic level it involves focusing on native plants, forgoing chemicals and creating habitats for wildlife.

Fragrance & Romance
The shift to native plantings and responsible gardening has to be systematic and sustained. With climate change, looming drought conditions this is a natural progression. Delivering a habitat for native species to successfully reproduce allows food sources for native wildlife and insects, creates a balanced ecosystem. These plants are adaptable and more likely to survive temperature, humidity and rainfall swings, in comparisons to cultivated ornamental and non-native plants. Another emerging trend has been on focusing on eco-friendly materials, reducing waste with its corresponding minimizing impact on the environment. The focus is also on reducing maintenance and use of organic fertilizers and natural compost. Given the space restrictions in urban spaces, these changes have to be taken in tiny but educated steps in the right direction.

Green Care
Working in the garden has become a personal expression of unique styles, a tranquil space for relaxation and family gathering. Incorporating elements of nostalgia, fun, color and fragrance, outdoor areas are meeting spaces for minds and bodies.
Hands immersed in soil, sun on the back, watching flower beds, vegetable patches and container pots come alive, fosters a sense of accomplishment and community connection. Stress and anxiety buster, gardening is well-recognized to be a calming activity, while weeding, digging and associated physical activity releases endorphins which have mood boosting effects. Watching plants thrive provides a sense of accomplishment and pride. Gardening as a hobby in itself inculcates mindfulness by focusing attention on the present moment. Bringing Nature into our homes is both a personal expression and therapy. Edible garden with its bounty of herbs, fruits and vegetables brings out the best in most avid gardeners. From window sill herbs to complete vegetable plots, there are so many creative ways for this sustainability trend. Sourcing our food and taking control of our diets is an empowering experience in self-sufficiency.

So lovely to see your slice of heaven Bhavani! Our gardens tend to be our sanctuary - thank you for sharing your vision and your journey - Lalita Dileep
Dear Lalita, this post caught me right in the middle of my planning yet another partial shade area and trying to convert it into a garden space that’s not just grass and stubble! Mine is a shade garden with a huge beech tree taking center stage! I like to think of it as a woodland garden rather than a challenge😂 Like you say so eloquently, our gardens are our refuge, a place of solace and incredible rewards. Filled with brilliantly colored flowers it will never be, but my garden is my personal happy place🌹
