Exploring the Significance of Self-Expression
A process not a destination
Self- expression can be a maligned quality. Seen as a vocal utterance often unwarranted, of views, opinions, values and beliefs that encroach on others personal space. In today’s world of fractured viewpoints, divisive thought processes and online trolls, many shy from it.
Yet self-expression is a significant means of growth and self-development. It opens doors to learning new things, discovering fresh perspectives and an opportunity to explore. It is a fundamental aspect of human nature that allows us to communicate our identity to the world. A process of communication that reflects our personality and our unique identity. Knowing this, self-expression is a vital part of who we are and plays a central role in our physical and mental well- being. A window to boost self-esteem, nurture a sense of self identity and belonging and a means to combat stress. Self – expression the virtual bridge between our inner conscious world and the outer reality where vibrant connections can be fashioned. Not only is self – expression an important part of our self-learning, but also one with far reaching consequences. Its outreach encompasses a wide range of outlets including art, music, writing, journaling and much, much more.
Self- Expression to the Rescue
In essence it is the key to communication. Giving Life to our voice in different contexts, so we may gain a better understanding of what makes us distinctive in our persona. Allowing us to flourish in creative ways in all aspects of our Life, be it in our personal life, work or creative outlets. Since self – expression allows us to externalize our thoughts and feelings, it becomes a unifying tool for both individuals and societies. A form of catharsis enabling us to release and process emotions in a healthy and positive way. A major milestone to mental wellbeing. It is only when we repress our emotions that they are in danger of becoming toxic.
Simply put, self – expression can be liberating. Finding our voice, establishing our core, stabilizing our self. Speaking for myself, “say what you think” epiphany came to me rather late in Life. I was somewhat a late bloomer, an eldest born cast in the mold of being “correct”, a role model to my younger siblings. This left little wiggle room and “finding” my own voice happened only when I was much older. From that point onwards I evolved, albeit slowly in fits and starts. Coming into my own and I am delighted to find that my self – discovery and self –expression unfolded hand –in- hand.
Strength in Vulnerability
There is no authenticity without vulnerability. Self – Expression demands we reveal true parts of ourselves to the world, instead of hiding behind masks and facades. It also teaches us self-acceptance, allows us to stay true to ourselves and take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions. As we are confident indicating our preferences, needs and wants while staying true to our values and beliefs, we build boundless equity. As we strike forward confidently, let’s focus on staying true to ourselves not on what people think of us. What thoughts do you have to share, my readers? Does this resound with you, what can you add to my story telling?
We are stronger together
